FDSD is among the partners in a major one-day international seminar in Rio de Janeiro on June 14th led by Brazil’s Ministério Público Federal.

Titled Além do Rio: Diálogos com a sociedade civil para a Rio+20. Panel sessions will focus on the social justice and sustainable development, with discussions on environmental justice, sustainable urbanisation, public participation, and the balance between future generations and the public interest, among other topics.

Halina Ward will be speaking on ‘principles to equip democracy to deliver sustainable development’ in a panel discussion, two days before the formal launch of FDSD’s consultation on the world’s first people’s manifesto for sustainable development.

The seminar also offers an opportunity for international visitors to Rio de Janeiro during Rio+20 to learn more about the work of Ministério Público, a body of public prosecutors independent of executive, legislature or judiciary, who in addition to prosecuting crimes are enabled to bring actions in the defense of the environment, consumers and civil society.

The seminar takes place at Auditório da Procuradoria da República no Rio de Janeiro. Av Nilo Peçanha, 31 – 6º andar – Centro – Rio de Janeiro.
