Climate Camp’s direct democracy for direct action: not far enough

Halina Ward argues that online voting illustrates some of the problems with simple direct democracy, including an absence of informed and accountable processes.

Her comments also draw on a talk by Liam Taylor of Climate Camp at a Compass conference session – Radical Democracy and Imagination: “I think we should worry less about the intricacies of voting systems and more about creating meaningful democratic experiences … [it is rather] a process, a movement. … [where] landscapes of power are in some way transformed by the collective action of ordinary people.
