The Mandate of a UN High Commissioner for Future Generations

Published by FDSD and the World Future Council, this paper was written to help UN member states and international organisations prepare for “Rio+20”, the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development, suggesting specific powers and responsibilities.

The authors recommend that the mission of a UN High Commissioner for Future Generations should be: “to promote and protect the interests of future generations in the context of the imperative to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” and also suggests specific powers and responsibilities.
