FDSD believes that democracy needs to adapt in order to meet the challenges of sustainable development, but equally that democracy itself is a better away of achieving sustainable goals than autocracy. However, our current democratic system has been facing challenges for some time. In April 2022, a report by The Institute for Public Policy Research with polling by YouGov, illustrated the depth of this problem. Their Road to Renewal report shows that the electorate has profoundly lost faith in the ability of the UK’s parliamentary democracy to represent their interests. Only 6% of those surveyed thought that their views influenced politician’s behaviour, compared with 25% believing rather that political donors had influence, and 16% business. Worryingly, young people aged 18-24 are the least likely to agree that democracy serves them well, at only 19%.
